Japan’s doom-death band HETEROPSY have unleashed their long-awaited debut album, Embalming, now streaming in full at Death Metal Promotion ahead of its official release tomorrow, October 31st, via Caligari Records.
Formed in 2020, HETEROPSY features members of Frostvore, yet the band carves its own distinct path, one they describe as “mourning death metal.” Picture doom-death bathed in HM-2 distortion, where melancholy meets madness in a swamp of molten riffs and cavernous despair.
The band states:
“We mixed our favorite death metal sounds, simmered them, sharpened them, stripped them bare, and then converted them into SAMURAI SWORD.”
Drawing influence from Dismember, Autopsy, Rippikoulu, Sadness (Switzerland) and early Naglfar, HETEROPSY embody the spirit of early ‘90s death metal filtered through the peculiar, obsessive craftsmanship of Japan’s underground scene. Embalming channels “vague madness and sadness”, resulting in a sound both reverent and deranged, a lost Scandinavian relic reanimated by Japanese maniacs.
Recorded following four EPs and a split, Embalming stands as the culmination of the band’s grim evolution, a grotesque yet soulful statement of intent.
